HOW TO START A SMALL BUSINESS

Introduction

If you have a good idea and want to turn it into a business, you are not alone. Small business are popping up all over the world and the concept of entrepreneurship is hot. Entrepreneurs seek opportunities and creative ways to make profits. Business emerges in a number of different organizational forms, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. 

Sole proprietorships are the most common form of business organisation in Nigeria. They tend to be small business and can take pretty much any form - anything from barbing or hair dressing salon to a scuba shop, from an organic provider to Financial advisor. Proprietorship are everywhere serving consumers' wants and needs. 

Proprietorships have a big advantages in That they tends to be simple to manage - decisions get made quickly when the owner and the manager are the same person and they are fairly simple and inexpensive to set up. Rules vary by state, but at most all you will need is a license from the government. 

Many people have been part of a partnership at some point in their life. Group work in school is an example of a partnership. If you ever worked as a DJ on the weekend with your friend and split the profits 
then you have experienced a partnership. 

Although it has its advantages, partnership is the least utilized form of business. Part of the reason is that all partners are responsible for the actions and decisions of all other partners, whether or not all of the partners were involved. Usually, partners will have to write up an Articles of Partnership that outlines respective responsibilities in the business. Even in states where it is not required, it is a good idea to draw up this document as a way to cement each partner's role and hopefully minimize conflict. Unlike corporation, proprietorships and partnerships both expire upon the death of one or more of those involved.
